An eastern barred bandicoot is released at Conservation Hill Reserve on April 21, 2026 in Phillip Island, Australia. Eastern barred bandicoots, bred for survival by conservationists, took their first steps onto Phillip Island in Australia today. The release marks a major milestone in efforts to restore the species, and follows previous releases of the animals which failed to thrive. Scientists from the Odonata Foundation, supported by Amazon???s Right Now Climate Fund, have successfully rebuilt the bandicoots??? genetic health by introducing diversity from Tasmanian populations separated for around 10,000 years. Carefully managed releases???featuring balanced sex ratios and stronger, larger individuals???will expand to at least five locations across Australia.
