There was a time not too long ago when it felt like all the traditionally published queer books were about coming out. Often these were tragic or emotionally devastating stories that could leave readers feeling hopeless and heartbroken. We begged for a wider scope of queer stories, and slowly a more diverse group of LGBTQ+ books across genres, topics, and identities began to emerge. As the publishing world reacts to political change and takes steps backwards, we must continue to demand a wide variety of queer stories.
But in truth, I have a soft spot for coming out stories. It’s a process that many (but not all) LGBTQ+ people experience. Coming out can be scary, but it can also be joyful, gratifying, and empowering. It’s one of those pivotal life moments when you know intrinsically that afterwards, nothing will ever be the same. Later-in-life coming out stories can be harder to find, but they’re a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to embrace your truth and live authentically. So even as we embrace a wider breadth of queer narratives, I hope coming out stories are here to stay.
